Former ECSA President Hans Jakob ‘Jack’ Kruse passed away
Hans Jakob Kruse, one of the icons of the container shipping industry, passed away earlier this week at the age of 84. Mr Kruse, popularly known in the sector as ‘Jack’, began his career with Hapag Lloyd in 1964. In 1973 he became Chairman of the Board of Germany’s largest shipping line, a position he held until 1993. Mr Kruse was an active Board member of ECSA and was appointed President of the organisation in 1990 for a term of two years.
Former Secretary General Alfons Guinier, who started working in ECSA under the Presidency of Mr Kruse, said: “Jack Kruse modernised the European shipowners’ lobby and changed the name of our organisation from CAACE to ECSA. He was instrumental in devising a European shipping policy, including the first elements of a framework to improve the competitiveness of the European shipping industry.” “He will be remembered as an excellent leader and a warm personality”, added Mr Guinier.
ECSA has conveyed its condolences to the family of Mr Kruse.
